Sermon Notes

Still in ‘Holy Week’

Warning of bad teaching of scribes of His day

  • Scribes were subset of pharisees
  • Scribes knew and interrupted The Law
  • But Talmud (Jewish legal book) said it was more important to listen to scribes than obey Gods’s word
  • They had an outward appearance to impress followers
  • Took advantage of defenseless people – windows and orphans. Showed their true character
  • Wordy and long prayers to impress people instead of God
  • Face special condemnation

Jesus

  • Patience and kindness to prostitutes and tax-collectors
  • The accomplices of Hell were the religious leaders of Jesus’ day. Condemning selves and others w/ their teachings

False Teachers

  • disguise themselves as good / ‘angels of light’
  • Today = Emergent movement / prosperity gospel / social gospel
  • Those that distort God’s Word on purpose
  • Also those that are not paying attention / care to the Truth

We should hate somethings

  • sin in our lives and lives of others
  • false teachers

Nothing should be a priority over the Gospel

  • Social
  • Sports
  • Politics
  • Hobbies

Things will change w/ more preaching of the Gospel

Bible Verses

45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

— Luke 20:45-47
